In December 2000, UNESCO declared this historical centre a World Heritage Site, stating the following: “The historical center of Arequipa is an example of ornamented architecture, represents a masterpiece of the creative coalition of European and native characteristics. A colonial town challenged by the conditions of nature, the indigenous influences, the conquest process and evangelism as well as for a spectacular natural scenario. Arequipa is surrounded by spectacular mountains, including the volcano El Misti. A feature of the city is its many beautiful buildings made of a light-colored volcanic rock called sillar, that’s why it’s also called the “White city”.  Photo: A detail of the façade of the Jesuit Church.

FESTIVALS. The main celebration in Arequipa occurs in August to mark the founding of the city in 1540. Typically, a dance exhibition, Festidanza, with participants from all over South America happens. There is an enlarged crafts market at the Fundo El Fierro, and there is an interesting general trade exhibition at the FIA (Feria Internacional de Arequipa). There are also massive rock concerts at the FIA, featuring musicians from all of Peru and Latin America. The night of the 14th there are firework displays all over the city. On the 15th there is a mass ascent of Misti and a parade around the center. Celebrations occur throughout this entire week Celebrations. In addition to this you can find other diverse artistic and cultural activities such as sporting events, typical bullfights and Mardi Gras.

EXCURSION The Colca Canyon. About => arguably the world’s deepest canyon, is a popular excursion from Arequipa (one or two days). Just four hours northeast of the city, the Colca boasts some of the most breath-taking landscapes in Peru : with more than 1 kilometer from cliff-edge to river bottom, with its pictoresque pre-inca terracing (andenes), impressive scenery and friendly Indian villages (e.g. Chivay) with traditionally dressed peasants, is certainly worth a visit. Curiosity => Unlike most of the Grand Canyon, portions of the Colca canyon are habitable, with pre-Colombian terraced fields still supporting agriculture and human life. What brings increasingly more visitors each year, in addition to the awesome sights, are the Andean condors. The condor population of South America is unfortunately dwindling, but here in Colca Canyon, visitors can see them at fairly close range. Cruz del Cóndor, or Condor Cross, about 50km (31 miles) west of Chivay, is nothing more than a lookout point and has become famous throughout Peru for this spectacular inhabitants. Activities => In addition to the Colca Canyon, the La Calera hot springs at Chivay are a wonderful way to relax after a day’s touring and close to Chivay, Coporaque features one of the oldest churches in Peru. In addition to all of this there are horseback riding, kayaking and whitewater rafting opportunities in the canyon.
