Views 31 Oct WHAT ABOUT TAXIS IN PERU!
 |  Category: Culture and Curiosities

Every major city in Peru has taxis and they are available in abundance and are not so expensive. It is not uncommon for travelers, particularly in groups, to use a cab to get from one town to another, since the fare, when divided, is often not more expensive than a minibus, and the ride considerably more comfortable. However there are no meters and fares are to be fixed before the ride. Passengers must always negotiate the price of a taxi or mototaxi ride with the driver before entering the vehicle.  This is very important, because if driver and passenger are not settled on the price, the passenger might find him or herself paying much more than necessary for the ride.In order to get advantage of taxis service, to feel safe and enjoy the view outside the window, it’s important to check few information before leaving!

  • At Lima airport, take an airport taxi and ensure that the driver have official identification. Never take a taxi waiting outside the airport ground even if it’s cheaper.
  • When arriving in a new town, keep to your original plan and stay in the hostel that you have decided on. Don’t let the taxi driver persuade you that your hostel is fully booked and that he knows a cheaper and better one. He’ll be working on commission and the hostel probably won’t be in a safe part of town.
  • Hailing taxis on the street should be quite safe above all in peak hours, provided that the cabs have the driver’s license prominently displayed.
  • Pay attention when traveling during no peak hours. Since taxi companies offer an economic and on time service you should always call a taxi company instead of taking one in the street above all during no peak times. Early in the morning or when leaving discos late at night take a taxi home no matter how close your hostel is. Most taxi drivers are not going to be a problem, but tourists have been robbed at night by taxi drivers who would take their money and leave them just anywhere. It doesn’t happen much in the daytime.
  • Due to Lima extension, move in town with a streets map since taxi drivers cannot always locate all Lima streets and you can easily get lost.
  • Be aware of Taxis prices in Lima: a ride from Lima Airport to Miraflores (30 -40 minutes) it costs around S./45-50. In the capital, a ride by taxi in the same district it costs around S./3 -4 and a short trip between two neighborhoods should cost between S./4 and S/7(usually it takes 20 minutes), while longer trips will cost around S./10 (g.e.from Miraflores to Lima historical center). The price doubles if you call a taxi. Some well-reputed taxi companies are Taxi Metro, Taxi Seguro, and Taxi Movil. In the other towns everything is cheaper, about 2 nuevo soles less than what it’s asked in the capital.
  • When riding in a taxi, passengers should lock the doors.  It is a good idea to put bags, purses, backpacks and other possessions in the trunk.  Cameras, cell phones, and other electronic devices should not be placed where pedestrians can see them (usually it’ s preferable to hide them under the front seat). It has happened many times that a pedestrian has reached into the window of a taxi and stolen items from passengers.
  • In Cusco, taxis come in every size, shape and color. In small towns such as for example, Piura, Puerto Maldonado, Iquitos the automobile taxis are available mostly for long rides, but the mototaxi is the most common mode of public transportation and it looks like a ricksha with a motorcycle welded onto the front. In this case since there is no trunk it’s better to always keep precious things hidden on yourself and take  a ride only in peak hours.
