This year is an important milestone for the nation of Peru as it celebrates the 100th anniversary of the rediscovery of the mysterious Lost City of the Incas – Machu Picchu.

In typical Peruvian style, festivities will be on a grand scale. There are a multitude of events planned to honor this momentous occasion.
There are many ongoing events taking place in honor of the anniversary, including music festivals, school contests and more.

100 Years of Machu Picchu
On July 3rd Cusco will see the Machu Picchu Centennial Parade through the city.
The main event will begin on July 7th at the ruins themselves. In the morning the traditional Tinkay ceremony will begin, along with the Salute to the Four Corners of the empire.  The Andean group Jaivas will perform “Heights of Machu Picchu”.

A 2 hour sound and light show will follow, accompanied by the Andean Symphony Orchestra.  The show will have a traditional theme, reflecting the indigenous ritual of making offerings to the Andean Mother Earth, Pachamama.

The event will be broadcast live and simultaneously there will be joyous shows taking place in the main squares of Cusco and Lima, among many other locations across Peru.
At 6am that day there will be a 21 gun salute in Cusco, followed by the Grand Cultural Art Festival.

100 Years of Machu Picchu
The following day there will be an all-day dance competition in the Plaza de Armas, between Cusco´s 13 provinces of Cusco, followed by a Float Parade through Cusco´s main streets and finally, the Andean Symphony Orchestra will perform along with Los Jaivas, followed by a fireworks display.

This anniversary is set to be one of the greatest cultural events of the modern world. There could be no better time to be in Peru.
