 |  Category: Must-see Travel Destinations

This fascinating metropolis with well over 2 million inhabitants (paceños) is located high up in the Bolivian mountains, with thin air and strong winds. At 4000 meter altitude it is the highest capital city in the world, well de-facto, because the legal capital is Sucre with only 200,000 inhabitants.

La Paz is truly the cultural and political epicenter of Bolivia and one of the oldest cities on the continent. The government resides here, as well as the biggest universities, and it breathes an air of excitement coming from the dynamic blend between tradition and everything modern. As far as entertainment you can find upscale nightclubs for all night fiestas next to folkloric bars called Peñas.

Plaza San Francisco is the meeting point for tourists in town. Around the massive church you can find a throng of hostels, museums and convenience stores but also traditional street markets, where you can witness indigenous shamans at work and pick up on some of the most colorful handicrafts in South America.

Welcome to La Paz: big city flair and exciting excursions!

Besides enjoying all this urban hustle and bustle, you should not miss out on some of these day excursions while you are in town:

El Alto Urban Trek
El Alto is a satellite city of La Paz, set high in the Altiplano highlands surrounding it. Many visitors only know this part of town because it is where the airport is. However if you opt to take this city hike you will be rewarded with astonishing views of the center of La Paz, admiring its urban sprawl through the mighty canyon of the Cordillera Real. There is also a peculiar museum you can visit, as it is built inside a water tower with an impressive Bolivian art collection on exhibit. When you walk back to the city’s lower parts you can see the vegetation change, with palm trees growing well in the warmer air and higher oxygen levels.

“Death Road” in the Yungas Cloud Forest
If it is adrenaline you are after, definitely go for this exhilarating mountain biking adventure. Nothing can describe the feeling of nerve-wracking ecstasy when you plunge down from 4800 to 1300 meters! You get to enjoy the spectacular Andean scenery from your bike descending from the ‘Cumbre’ all the way to the cloud forests of the Yungas! Only for the brave, because this extreme adventure is not called the ‘death road’ for nothing. If that wasn’t enough you can hit the 1555 meters long zip-line and ‘fly’ over the Eastern slopes of the Andes at a dazzling speed.

Hampaturi Ramble Hike
This day hike takes you out to the Valley of Hampaturi about half an hour away from La Paz. You will walk from the Western side, crossing a dam over the Hampaturi Lake, towards the Eastern side of the Bolivian Highlands. On the way several small rural villages are being visited where you can see many houses made from adobe, just like they have been doing for hundreds of years. This amazing ramble gives you a great perspective on the lifestyle of the locals, the same for countless generations, in the spectacular landscapes of the Valley.
